Campus / Practice example

A fairer funding conversation

Use the same criteria for every funding request, and write down why the group made its decision.

The situation

Your campus committee is reviewing a funding request. You know what the money would be used for, but some costs are still unconfirmed and you haven’t checked what’s already been promised.

Your decision

Work out what the committee needs to check before deciding.

Before you respond

  • How much is being requested, and how much has already been promised?
  • Which criteria should you use for every request?
  • Who can explain the restrictions and required approvals?

Work through it

  1. List the amount requested, the amount approved and the money available separately.
  2. Review this request using the same criteria as the others.
  3. Write down each unanswered question and who will check it.
Consider a possible response

“We can talk through what the funding is for today. Before we decide, we need to confirm these costs and what we’ve already promised. Who can check each one?”

This is one way to respond. Adapt it to your group, your responsibilities and the people involved.
