Your first contribution

Find out what the group needs, take on a task you can finish and agree when to check in.

The situation

A group needs help getting ready for its next meeting. You want to join in, but you’re not sure which job to take or how long it’ll take.

Your decision

Pick a first task you have the time and support to finish.

Before you respond

  • What does the group need before the meeting?
  • What needs to happen for the task to be done?
  • Who can help if you get stuck?

Work through it

  1. Ask the meeting organizer which small task they need help with.
  2. Find out how much time it will take, what you’ll need and who can help.
  3. Agree on when you’ll check in, and let them know if the plan changes.
Consider a possible response

“I can help get the meeting materials ready. What do we need, and when should I have them finished?”

This is one way to respond. Adapt it to your group, your responsibilities and the people involved.
