A clear place in community work

Before you offer to help, find out who’s responsible, who’s affected and what the group actually needs.

The situation

A community group is starting a project you care about. You want to help, but you don’t yet know who’s responsible or who’s had a say in the plan.

Your decision

Find a task the group needs help with, and be clear about what you can take on.

Before you respond

  • Who is responsible for the work?
  • Who will be affected, and who hasn’t had a say yet?
  • How much time and support would you need?

Work through it

  1. Ask how decisions get made and where the group needs help.
  2. Listen to the people affected before suggesting a change.
  3. Agree on a task with a clear limit and someone you can check with.
Consider a possible response

“I’d like to help. Who’s responsible for this part, and what could I take on before we meet again?”

This is one way to respond. Adapt it to your group, your responsibilities and the people involved.
