Begin before you have a title

Start with something small you can finish. Notice what your group needs, ask where you can help and follow through.

You don’t need an official role to start helping your group. Look for something that needs doing, ask if it would help and take on a task you can finish.

Watch how the group works and listen to the people already involved. There might be a reason something hasn’t happened yet, or someone may already be handling it.

Ask what needs attention, where an extra person would help or what someone wishes they’d known when they started. Get a sense of the work before picking a task.

Be honest about your time and the help you’ll need. Finishing a small task gives the group something it can count on. Check what a bigger commitment would take before offering.

Let the person you agreed with know what you finished, what’s left and anything you couldn’t do. If your situation changes, tell them while there’s still time to adjust.

Afterward, think about what you learned about the work, the people involved and your part in it. Use that when you choose what to take on next.
